Last year – 8-4, made it to semifinals before losing to eventual champion Vienna Vikings. I love their old jerseys and I’m upset they’ve switched their logo and jersey, but i will not be biased by that while reviewing their team. I promise!
QB – Conor Miller- hailing from Florida Atlantic University, this QB has been with the Leipzig Kings for the past season (only started 3 games) and decided to sign with the Barcelona Dragons. Miller was never truly able to play at Florida Atlantic but that didn’t stop him from his dream of playing pro. He played for the Austrian Graz Giants of the Austrian Football League and played very well. It may be tough to make up for the loss of Zach Edwards, but I think Miller has the skill to do it.
RB – Toni Monton- he’s been with the team for three years now and is ready to breakout. A product of Spain, looking for big things from the homegrown talent. He will look to make up for the lack of a rushing game after the loss of their QB, Zach Edwards, who was 6th in the league in rushing last year.
WR’s – Jordi Torrededia renewed his contract for the upcoming year and will look to have a breakout season with a new QB at the helm. Austin Duke, the all-time leading receiver in yards, receptions and TDs at University of North Carolina of Charlotte, takes his talents overseas to grow this fantastic game. He had a stint with the Panthers and XFL and will look to be a stud on this offense. I do worry about his full-time gig as a real estate agent interfering with his play, but we’ll find out. These two guys will have to make up for the loss of the top receiver in the league last year in Kyle Sweet, no easy task.
O-Line – Look for this bunch to have a good campaign led by their OL coach Eduardo Nuno who was a Juco OL coach in San Francisco, winning 9 national titles while there. Mikel Gomez should build on last year’s success with the Dragons. Ben Dixon was an offensive line MVP for a British football team last year and he will be joining the Dragons this year. These two guys should be the focal point for this offense.
D-Line- They are losing 2022 all-star Alejandro Fernandez (15.5 sacks last year) but are looking to build a stellar line with the help of Darius Slade. Slade was a former three-star recruit to Ohio State, who bounced around until he started playing a bit for University of South Florida. He will look to bring his bull game to this defensive line. Slade will also need to make up for the loss of Michael Sam on defense. Sam played for the University of Missouri and the St. Louis Rams and was 6th in sacks last year. This part of the line may struggle.
Linebackers – Look for Alex “Posito” Gonzales to take a step forward this year and become a force on D. He was top 20 in tackles last year in the ELF and is hungry in 2023. Hugo Dyrendahl, a Swedish national team member, should also be on people’s radars going into 2023.
DB’s – The squad has signed Luke Glenna a defensive back from St. Thomas in America. In the FCS, he was considered a defensive player of the year candidate and looks to bring that fire to Barcelona. They also have Jordi Brugnani, a local talent coming back, who was top ten in interceptions last year.
I think their experienced QB and Austin Duke will push them to the top of the league. I’m not sure if they have the firepower to beat the Vikings (especially with the loss of two of the top-6 sackmen), but I like them to make the playoffs.
