Well, the trade deadline has come and gone with some teams completely selling or completely buying. The Mets sent Verlander and Scherzer away—sellers. The Rangers, looking to keep their surprising AL West lead alive, were huge buyers getting both Scherzer and left-hander Jordan Montgomery. Then we get to the middle tier, teams who don’t know what they are, one of those teams are the Boston Red Sox.

Coming into the year, the Red Sox weren’t supposed to do anything special, they got rid of J.D. Martinez, Chris Sale was still hurt, and they came off a postseason less season. Up to this point, they’ve exceeded expectations, hard to say for a team in fourth place in their division and 2 games back of the wild card, but they were not supposed to be good at all, so this is a good season. But then comes the question, “What are they?”. Do they ship off Verdugo? Do they pick up a rockstar pitcher like Scherzer or Verlander, or do they stay stagnate? They made one move, trading Kike Hernandez, back to the Dodgers, but that’s not a definitive move in a certain direction. Instead, they just watched. Do I think they have a chance at the World Series, no. Do I think they can make the playoffs, oh, without a doubt. In my book, however, if you’re not going to win the whole damn thing, you better win it next year, and that means getting prospects, trade bait for next year. Chaim Bloom (GM of the Red Sox), instead, watched as the hours ticked away on August 1st, standing still, holding his gun.

Bloom is in his 4th year with the Red Sox and it has been almost completely disappointing. Sox Nation had huge hopes for this guy, maybe even the next Theo Epstein, but each year, it’s disappointing trades mixed with disappointing finishes. But this year, he surprised the Nation, they were winning when they weren’t supposed to, and the only way they have a chance at a World Series is by making trades to get players. If you don’t think you have a chance, make trades! I don’t see Chaim being GM for much longer, but I wish he could’ve at least set the Sox up for the future. Now, it appears the Red Sox may be in purgatory for the foreseeable future, while Chaim Bloom goes to fired GM’s hell.
